Causes of stress at work

        CAUSES OF STRESS AT WORK

Too old for computers
“It is really just that I don't catch on. I try to give the impression that I understand what it is all about. But the fact is I don't. The younger ones see through me. It all comes naturally to them. Each time I have to work it all out, while they just do it. It is second nature to them, but not for me.”
Technology has advanced so quickly that we in the older phase of life cannot possibly keep up with it.
No secrets. You and me. I am quite open with you. I am caught in the technological advances of medicine with which I cannot possibly keep abreast in any detail. So we are in the same boat. I am sure the answer is to use the assets we have, rather than try to develop new skills which are very difficult when you have not grown up with them.
And our assets. What are they? They are a greater experience of life than the youngsters, who are so much better than we are in the new technology. Experience of life must surely bring some kind of wisdom. This is our asset. In the new scientific knowledge of medicine, the youngsters, who have developed this technology, have as yet not developed the wisdom as to how it can best be used. This is where we come into it. You with the new technology of business, me with the new technology of medicine.

When we are not quite well
«Yesterday I did not chair the meeting as well as I usually do. Today I feel I am getting 'flu. I suppose you would say it is psychosomatic. »
He poses a very real question. If today he feels he is getting 'flu, it means that he was incubating the virus yesterday. Another background problem for his nervous system. Perhaps enough to tip the scales and put him under stress. In other words, it is most likely that it was stress from the incipient infection that reduced his performance at the meeting. More likely this than the stress of the meeting going badly giving him 'flu so quickly.
The question as to what is cause and what is effect keeps recurring in any serious study of stress. The more we examine the matter, the more complicated the relationship of cause and effect seems to be. In many cases cause and effect cannot be seen as alternatives or as opposing forces. It seems that we should take a wider philosophical view, and maybe consider them as different facets of some greater process.
